Creating a Fall-tastic Wardrobe
It is faaaaalll!!! And I don't know about you, but this is my most favorite time of the year. I love the chunky sweaters, lots of boots, warm hats, cozy blankets, the cool weather...all of it! What about you? Are you a fall fan? Do you know what I love most though? Fall wardrobes! Now they can be mine, or they can be a clients, either way, I just love them.
What about you? Do you have a fall wardrobe or is your wardrobe fall ready?
Why do I ask? Well, because now is a good time to make sure that your staple pieces are in good standing - your tees, your sweaters, your jeans. Make sure they aren't faded, stained or pilling. Then add a pair of booties, a textured flat, a rain boot, a suede or leather sneaker, a few chunky sweaters, a neutral handbag, classic coat and you will be fall ready! Take a sneak peak at some of my favorites right now*:
Now that you know that your pieces are in good standing, it’s a good time to take a look at your wardrobe and see what needs to be added or updated. This goes beyond the previous task of looking over your staple pieces. It’s time to check in with yourself. Has your personal style changed in the past year? Has your body changed in the past year? Are your favorite items still fitting great? Is your wardrobe still representing what you want it to? Once you honestly answer those questions, it’s time to make a plan!
Updating your fall wardrobe doesn’t mean doing a full closet overhaul, but you will need to take a look at your closet and see which things you have and where are some holes that need to be filled. I find that by having a notepad in my closet helps, but you could use your phone or an iPad and start a list of things that you notice are missing or that you would like to add to your wardrobe. Maybe you need a new winter coat. Or you’re ready to swap out those skinny jeans and embrace the more relaxed look of a straight leg or boot cut jeans*.
Once you know what you need, decide on your budget per item. I tell clients to invest in quality pieces that will last a long time instead of buying something that is just a quick fix that they'll only wear once or one way. Make sure you can wear the item at least three ways or with three different items in your closet so you get the most out of it.
Now that you have your list, when the time comes to shop, you’ll shop with purpose, and only buy what you need. Why is this so important? Well, you wouldn't go to the grocery store without some kind of list or idea as to what to buy, would you? So shopping for your wardrobe is the same way. You want to shop with purpose and make your purchases work for you for a long time.
