It’s a Toxic Relationship - How to Break Up With Your Clothes
Are you someone who during the quarantine, has gone through your closet and yet you’re still holding onto things that you haven’t worn for a while because you don’t know how, or they don’t fit properly or because, you don’t even know why? You just don’t love them enough to grab them? Then I have a simple piece of advice for you. Break up with them!
What do I mean by that? All those items that you are holding on to because grandmother gave them to you, or because you splurged but never wore it, or because you're going to wear it again as soon as you lose 10 lbs or whatever, just get rid of it. Break up with them for good. They really aren't serving you if you're not wearing them or you don't feel good in it them when you do or you're just wear them for someone else and not yourself. You need to love what you wear and if you don't, then get rid of it. Just because you splurged, doesn't mean you have to keep it. If you've never worn it or hated it, sell it and make some money back. And waiting until you lose weight is never a good enough reason to hold onto something for years. When you lose weight your body changes, so even if it fits after a weight loss, it most likely won't look the same or fit the same and it will still be there, hanging in your closet. And I promise you, grandma would rather you have something that you love.
Break up with those things. Move on. Start to really look at your closet and purge with purpose. Make a list of what you're purging that you would like to replace. Then when you go shopping, take your list and shop with purpose. Don't keep bringing in items without purging ones that aren't serving you. Purge regularly so that over time, it's a quick and effortless chore instead of a huge, daunting task. If you need help with deciding what serves you or not, ask a trusted friend or invest in professional. Use this time to break up with the bad and fall in love with the good!
So what do you do with everything once you purge? Well, right now that is kind of a hard question. Most donation sites have been closed temporarily or they are only taking donations of medical supplies. Plus with the virus, dropping off your items may not be the best idea. You can hang on to them for a while until donation drop offs are open and just store them away for now.
But, if you have things that are still in great condition, you could always sell them. The Real Real is great for designer clothes and accessories. Tradsey is also a great site that takes a mix of mid to high range items. If you have the time to work Poshmark, posting your items and selling them there could bring in a nice little chunk of change, but you really have to be prepare to put in the time to move them.
Another option is Thred Up. Thred Up takes a mix of high and low items so everything from Target to Tory Burch is acceptable. You send them the clothes, they inspect, photograph, and sell them for you. You get credit or cash for the items you sell. So super easy! And right now, you can have your clothes turned in cash and donated to a charity that you want to help. It’s a win-win for everyone!
So there are some options on what you can do with your purged wardrobe even if you can’t donate them just yet. And if you still have things that you need to break up, well you have some time to go back and add those thing to the pile. And once you do I promise you, you will feel so much better about your wardrobe.
